Classic Big Bang


Two wineglass-like scenarios for the universe. In the classic Big Bang picture (above) the universe must at some early stage have expanded faster than a light ray (shown in blue). This requires the additional mechanism of "inflation". Only in this way could galaxies appearing today on opposite sides of the sky have "known" of each other's existence and endowed the universe with its remarkable smoothness.
